About this piece
Edwardian Satinwood Kidney Shaped Writing Desk – Circa 1900
An elegant Edwardian satinwood kidney shaped writing desk, circa 1900, beautifully decorated with delicate hand-painted floral garlands, ribbon bows and classical ornamentation, displaying wonderful colour and graceful proportions.
The attractive kidney shaped top features a shaped inset green leather writing surface, decorated with gilt tooling around the border. The surrounding satinwood is further embellished with delicate floral decoration, complementing the richly coloured timber and distinctive curved outline.
The desk features an arrangement of nine drawers, comprising four graduated drawers to each side and a central frieze drawer above the kneehole. Each drawer is beautifully decorated with hand-painted floral swags, ribbons and ornamental motifs, complemented by attractive circular brass ring handles.
The elegant curved pedestal ends are similarly decorated with charming floral and ribbon motifs, adding to the decorative appeal of the piece. The kneehole is generously proportioned, with shaped brackets beneath the central drawer.
The whole stands on elegant square tapering legs terminating in brass castors, completing the refined proportions of this particularly attractive desk.
A highly decorative and practical example of Edwardian cabinetmaking, combining beautifully figured satinwood, fine hand-painted decoration and elegant craftsmanship. An ideal writing desk for a study, drawing room, bedroom or sophisticated home office.
Presented in good antique condition, with age-related wear and character consistent with its age and use.
