About this piece
Edwardian Satinwood and Marquetry Inlaid Bureau Bookcase – Circa 1900
A superb quality Edwardian satinwood bureau bookcase, circa 1900, beautifully decorated with intricate marquetry inlay depicting floral, foliate and classical motifs, displaying wonderful colour and exceptional decorative appeal.
The upper section features an elegant broken swan-neck pediment, richly embellished with fine floral and foliate inlay, centred by a classical urn motif. Below are a pair of glazed doors with attractive geometric astragal glazing bars, opening to reveal a shelved interior, ideal for displaying books, porcelain or decorative objects.
The lower section features a beautifully figured satinwood fall front, richly decorated with intricate marquetry inlay depicting scrolling foliage, floral sprays and classical figures. The central oval cartouche depicts a seated female figure playing a lyre, flanked by symmetrical ornamental scrollwork and charming winged figures, all finely executed in contrasting coloured timbers.
The fall front opens to reveal a fitted interior comprising a series of pigeonholes, four small drawers and a central cupboard, all finished in contrasting darker timber. The writing surface is fitted with an inset green leather writing panel, providing a practical and attractive workspace.
Below the bureau are four graduated drawers, each beautifully decorated with delicate floral and foliate marquetry inlay, complemented by decorative brass swan-neck handles. The intricate inlaid decoration continues throughout the piece, demonstrating the quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
The whole stands on traditional shaped bracket feet, completing the elegant proportions of this particularly attractive piece.
A highly decorative and practical example of Edwardian cabinetmaking, combining the warmth of satinwood with fine marquetry inlay and classical detailing. An ideal statement piece for a drawing room, study, library or elegant interior.
Presented in good antique condition, with minor age-related wear and character consistent with its age and use.
